Thursday Tip: Odd Music

March 15, 2018

In the past sixty-five years or so, pop music mainly relied on guitar, piano, bass guitar, and drums. Even beyond the seemingly infinite possibilities of digital music making, there is a whole scala of instruments that have been developed out of pure creativity. What to think of the Aquaggaswack, Fiddle-dee-doo, or Samchillian Tip Tip Tip Cheeepeeeee?

Odd Music is a digital database of inventive instruments, featuring some of the weirdest ones around. Some are clearly reinventions of classics, like the Cigar Box Guitar and the Beer Bottle Organ, or syntheses of two or more instruments, like the Imratgitar (sitar & guitar) and Trimeister (guitar, mandolin, and fiddle). Others play on size, like Contrabass Sax in Eb (biggest woodwind worldwide) and the Nano Guitar (smallest guitar in the world), or cross over to different disciplines, like the Chrysalis (design) or the Symphonic House (architecture).
